A Spoonful of Change
A Spoonful of Change
I was casually scrolling through Instagram, when a sheera recipe reel stopped me. I keep looking for simple Indian dessert recipes which my kitchen can dish out! Now sheera is the most predictable - make it with your eyes shut - kind of comfort healthy food in the Indian kitchen. ๐ Sooji. Ghee. Roast. Sugar. Water. Stir. Done.
But this insta recipe was with a small twist. It skipped roasting the sooji, instead soaked it in milk for 1 hr. Next step added it to beautifully caramelised liquid of ghee n sugar! When I tried it in my kitchen it browned perfectly warm and golden. With saffron, cardamom, and raisins folded in, the texture felt different. It was smooth, slightly creamy, something like mildly sweetened fresh khoya.
Imagine the excitement - it made me come back to my blog which I had started writing way back in 2020! The baking era under the house arrest!
And it made me think… How often do we live on autopilot, like making the same old sheera? We wake up with same routines. Same reactions. Same conversations. Same fears. Repeat endlessly.
I liked the recipe and tried it - believe me it came out unexpectedly superb! I had my doubts - sooji is not roasted …how is it going to taste! It was a reminder that thinking differently does not always require a dramatic change. Our preconceived notions often keep us from trying new things - like soaking sooji in milk instead of roasting it in ghee.
And as I thought about it, my mind wandered… connecting the dots… to life itself-
- Trying a new route to work.
- Sharing a thought, you often hold back.
- Learning something now that you think you should have learned back then! And that reminds me a friend saying - it takes just a day to learn a new skill….!
- Looking at your problems with a different prespective!!
Conventional is comfortable. And I love comfort! I mean who doesn’t love comfort - But sometimes comfort can also quietly turn into mundane sleep. So how about - Just a pinch of change and experience the feel of - “everything turns exciting.” Yes this is the age where you look for cheap thrills! ๐Like a batch of sheera turning out perfectly in your own kitchen - simple joys! When we dare to soak the sooji instead of roasting, experiment with ingredients, and risk a batch that might not turn out perfect, we invite excitement and surprise back into the kitchen.
Another beautiful part which I learnt, not now with this sheera episode, but generally- like they say wisdom comes with the age. Even if the experiment fails, you still grow. You never know - The palate may evolve. And definitely the courage gets stronger! Sometimes the key is not doing more. It is doing differently. So, the next time when it feels a little too routine, pause for a moment and ask yourself - What small twist can I add today? Voilร ! My sheera survived the ultimate Master Chef panel back at home ๐. Next My spoonful of change is reconnecting with old friends from many moons ago and planning a delicious food tour together ๐. Here’s to pinch of change, tasty dishes, hearty laughs, and making up for all the weddings I missed!
